Women do in fact feel the cold sooner than men. The difference is around five degrees. There are a number of good reasons why women feel the cold more quickly:

  • The male hormone testosterone gives men greater muscle mass. Muscles are constantly supplied with blood and produce heat continuously.

  • Women are usually shorter than men. A smaller body gives off relatively more heat than a larger one.

  • Men have an epidermis that is 15 per cent thicker than that of women, which reduces heat loss through radiation
