Bright yellow: freshness, joy, and sales impulses in advertising

Yellow is considered the brightest of the three primary colours. In advertising, it is used to represent cheerfulness, liveliness, and happiness. The colour is associated with energy and freshness and also evokes thoughts of gold. These positive associations have their origins in the vibrant radiance of the sun, a source of warmth and light that makes life on earth possible.

The intuitive reference to the sun and its symbolic character are cleverly used in poster advertising, whether for refreshing drinks, train journeys or everyday products. Yellow also acts as a signal colour that spreads a good mood through impressive staging and encourages purchases.

Alessia Contin, curator of the poster collection at the Museum für Gestaltung Zürich, unveils her favourite poster from the current exhibition.

Bodenwichse Co-op

Walter Grieder, Bodenwichse Co-op, 1946

"My personal favourite is definitely the poster by Walter Grieder for Co-op Bodenwichse (floor polish). On the one hand, I am impressed by the well-thought-out use of diagonals in the depiction of the open can. This effectively brings the seductive golden-yellow product, which has an almost honey-buttery shimmer, to the fore. On the other hand, I was particularly taken with the trusting, mischievous look on the cute little dog's face. It seems as if it is looking me in the eyes and offering me the shiny floor polish with an innocent expression.
The artist Walter Grieder from Basel (1914-2004) worked as a commercial artist after graduating from the School of Applied Arts in St.Gallen and Basel. From the 1960s onwards, he also devoted himself to illustrating numerous books for children and young people. I particularly remember the fascinatingly imaginative pictures from his book Das verzauberte Schloss (The Enchanted Castle), published in 1963."

Poster collection, Museum für Gestaltung Zürich

The poster collection at the Museum für Gestaltung Zürich is one of the most comprehensive and important archives of its kind in the world. It contains around 350,000 objects, with about 150,000 catalogued, all documenting the national and international history of the poster from its origins in the mid-19th century to the present day.  The collection includes political, cultural and commercial posters. Their diversity of historical, thematic and geographic subjects results in both a panorama of poster art and a glimpse into a visual archive of day-to-day life. Some of the posters are available to view in the museum’s online database: www.emuseum.ch. This database is constantly being expanded.
