Social engagement in public spaces – the anniversary edition
125 years of APG|SGA and 150 years of the Museum für Gestaltung Zürich, two institutions with a long history: to mark their double anniversary, they are jointly presenting the second virtual exhibition with a selection of social posters that themselves celebrate anniversaries and social commitment. Whether humorous, thought-provoking or poignant, the posters on display highlight social issues and encourage solidarity, participation and responsibility. The posters tell of commitment to the environment, equality or social justice and show how powerful visual communication can be in public spaces. They touch, provoke and move – then as now.
Alessia Contin, curator of the poster collection at the Museum für Gestaltung Zürich, unveils her favourite poster from the virtual exhibition "Social engagement in public spaces – the anniversary edition".
Döne Akpinar, 80 Jahre Winterhilfe, 2016
"I would particularly like to highlight the 2016 poster by Döne Akpinar, then a student at the Basel School of Design. It commemorates the 80th anniversary of Winterhilfe. The patchwork on the jeans in the form of an embroidered snowflake, the Winterhilfe logo, shows in a subtle, poetic way how donations can work small and big miracles. This work is part of a long tradition that Winterhilfe Switzerland has been pursuing with its poster campaigns since its foundation in 1936. Its public presence serves two purposes: on the one hand, it makes a concrete appeal for donations on its own behalf, and on the other, it offers young designers the opportunity to show their work to a wide audience."

Poster collection, Museum für Gestaltung Zürich
The poster collection at the Museum für Gestaltung Zürich is one of the most comprehensive and important archives of its kind in the world. It contains around 350,000 objects, with about 150,000 catalogued, all documenting the national and international history of the poster from its origins in the mid-19th century to the present day. The collection includes political, cultural and commercial posters. Their diversity of historical, thematic and geographic subjects results in both a panorama of poster art and a glimpse into a visual archive of day-to-day life. Some of the posters are available to view in the museum’s online database: www.emuseum.ch. This database is constantly being expanded.
